HMAS Castlemaine

HMAS Castlemaine is an Australian warship that was used in the Second World War which has been carefully restored as an attraction and reminder of the country’s maritime past.

The Australian-built corvette was launched in 1941, and remained in use for four years before its conversion to a training ship.

In 1973, the corvette was transformed into a museum ship, and attracts many visitors year after year. What used to be the main mess deck has now been turned into a museum and the bridge, captain’s cabin, chart room and officer’s accommodation have also been restored.

Visitors will be able to see the boiler and engine rooms which have been completely overhauled and the engines are now in a working condition. The ship is presently berthed in the Nelson Place Precinct in Williamstown and remains open to the general public on weekends and public holidays.

Visitors get to tour every part of the ship and will come to understand how the HMAS Castlemaine crew worked and lived during the four years that the corvette was in service. The ship is also home to an array of artefacts that highlight the country’s rich history. A tour of the ship will generally take around 1 hour.

To get to the HMAS Castlemaine by public transport, catch a Williamstown train line from the CBD and alight at Williamstown station. The ship is a short 10 minute walk (1.2km) walk.
