Melbourne Museum

At the Melbourne Museum, you’ll get an opportunity to explore the real history of Victoria. The museum showcases everything about the state; including its natural environment, cultural history, local communities and urban growth.

Those driving to Melbourne Museum should head towards Nicholson Street and look out for the famous Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens, as the Museum is nestled within their grounds. There is daily underground parking available for an hourly fee.

Melbourne Museum Entry Prices, Address & Opening Hours

Visitors will come across a range of both permanent and temporary exhibits. In total, the museum boasts eight galleries, each featuring hundreds of ancient and modern artefacts and exhibits.

Some of the main highlights of the museum include its life-size skeleton of a blue whale, the largest animal on the planet as well as one of the biggest collections of Aboriginal artefacts in Australia. The site also features an IMAX theatre, where visitors can enjoy a documentary or feature film on one of the biggest movie screens in the country.

Importantly, the Melbourne Museum also has a Children’s Gallery which is all about children learning through play. The exhibitions are all about sight, touch and smell and children are encouraged to participate in scheduled events which change almost weekly.

The temporary exhibitions at the museum are constantly changing, so you’re advised to check the event calendar to learn more about the current and upcoming events. If you love history, animals or anything relevant to Australia, then visiting Melbourne Museum is a must.

Get to the Melbourne Museum via tram #86 or #96 and alight at the corner of Nicholson and Gertrude Streets. Alternatively, you can catch the free City Circle tram to Victoria Parade or take the city loop train and alight at Parliament Station with a short 10 minute walk to the venue.

    • Hi Brian,

Entry to the Melbourne Museum is free if you have a Health Care Card, Pension Card, Veterans Affairs Card or a Seniors Card.

Please note that additional charges do apply for some of the temporary exhibitions and special events. So if you intent to just visit the permanent exhibits, there should be no cost.

      Thanks
      Michael

    • Hi Lynda,

    • Hi Sarah,

You can buy tickets at the door or online, it is entirely up to you! The only benefit to buying online is that you may be able to skip the ticket queue during busy periods by walking straight up to the entrance with your ticket printed or on mobile.

      Best regards,
      Jess

    • Hi Miles,

The Royal Exhibition Building (REB) and the Museum are separate buildings (although within close proximity).

The REB hosts events and expos and is not open for general viewing. But you can take one of the guided tours which are held on most days at 2pm. The tours depart from the Melbourne Museum and cost $10 for adults, $8 for concession and $7 for children.

If you want to enter the museum, a separate ticket is required. You will be happy to know that cameras are permitted inside the museum.

      Regards,
      Jess
