Altona Beach

Altona Beach is one of Melbourne’s most pristine beach areas and has visitors flocking to its shores to enjoy recreational activities all year round.

Since it is also the largest beach in the city’s western suburbs, it attracts heaps of water sports including kite surfing, paddle boarding and swimming.

Altona Beach Melbourne – Tides, BBQ Facilities & Off Leash Dog Beach

There is a long pier located at Altona beach where you can walk out and look down over the water and the swimmers without getting wet. The pier is heritage listed as it was constructed in 1888 and has lasted until today, with very few modifications. May people enjoy fishing off the end of the pier with snapper being a common fish located here.

In the summer months, the Altona Beach is a very popular swimming spot for residents and families and is patrolled by surf life savers during these times. You will find them stationed on the eastern side of the pier, so it is best to swim in these areas, particularly if you have young children. The water at Altona Beach is calm, so you wont find surfers here, but body boarding and paddle boarding are a popular past-time. High tide occurs at around 6am & 6pm with low tide at 1pm.

There are shaded areas at Altona Beach for those who would like to enjoy a good read or simply chill with friends. You will find a variety of shops and cafes located right near the beach where you can pick up some snacks or a cold drink.

There are toilet facilities located at Logan Reserve and Weaver Reserve. You can also hire a locker to store your personal items whilst visiting Altona Beach. Lockers are available for hire from the Norfolk Café between 8am – 7.30pm for a $5 fee. BBQ facilities are also located in Logan Reserve and GH Ransom Reserve.

Dogs off leash are restricted from Altona Beach from 10am to 9.30pm from 1 November to 30 April every year, seven days a week. At all other times, dogs are permitted, but must be on a leash. However, dogs are permitted off leash at Burns Reserve (Altona Dog Beach) along Altona Road at all times.
