A haven for Australian wildlife, French Island National Park covers 11,000 hectares and is a great place to explore nature, take a walk or just enjoy the serenity of this natural oasis.

French Island National Park, Camping Accommodation, Walks & Cycling

With over 230 bird species located here, French island is a great place to go bird watching. You will find all kinds here including the orange-bellied parrot, the king quail as well as the white-bellied sea eagle.

Popular activities on the island include camping and walking. Walk through the bushland or along the beach as there are a number of walks to do. There are full-day walks where you can traverse the island or shorter walks which start from the Tankerton Foreshore Reserve. The island is mainly flat with only small inclines.

Camping is permitted at Fairhaven Campsite which is located on the west coast of the island. There are basic toilet facilities located here and water is available, but must be purified or boiled before consumption. Open fires are not permitted at any time, therefore campers must bring their own portable gas stove. Bring your own food and water as the items available at the general store are very limited. Rubbish must be taken away with you as there is no rubbish collection here. No booking are required to camp and there are no fees.

Vehicles are only allowed on the island with a permit and there are only limited driving roads on French Island. You are permitted to cycle on the island and mountain bikes are best suited due to the sandy and unpaved conditions. Please note that dogs are not permitted on the island.
