St Francis Church is a Catholic church located on the corner of Lonsdale and Elizabeth Streets, right in the city centre.

As Victoria’s oldest Catholic church, St Francis is a welcoming congregation which is open daily for services to anyone who would wish to join.

The church was designed by Samuel Jackson and was constructed in 1841. The church was the first cathedral church of the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne. The church was named after St Francis of Assisi and the church was blessed and opened on 23 October 1845.

The church is welcoming and engaging with the community and offers Bible studies, priest consultation, music engagement and mass. Priest consultation is available each week from Tuesday to Friday between 9:00 am and 4:45 pm, there is usually a priest from the Blessed Sacrament Community at St Francis’ who is available for consultation.

For confession, priests are available from Tuesday to Thursday at various times throughout the day.

The church offers the following mass services:
Sunday: 8am, 9:30am, 11:30am (with choir), 1:30pm, 5:30pm
Monday – Friday: 7:30am, 11am, 12:30pm, 5:30pm
Saturday: 8am, 12:30pm, 6pm (Vigil)
Public Holidays: 8am, 11am, 12:30pm, 5:30pm

You can reach the church by catching a #19, #57 or #59 tram along Elizabeth Street or by taking a train and alighting at Melbourne Central Station.
