Travel back in time by taking a steam train ride on the historic Puffing Billy. This is the only steam train railway tour that takes you on a mountainous track to show you some of the breathtaking and scenic views of the Dandenong Ranges.

This preserved steam railway is over a century old and has been beautifully maintained in working condition. The steam train runs on its original mountain track from the small township of Belgrave to Gembrook.

Puffing Billy Tours, Melbourne Day Trip & Tour Package

During the early 1900s, the local railway corporation developed this narrow gauze track as a part of an experimental project. Hundreds of dedicated volunteers work on the train every day to help and serve guests.

Puffing Billy Railway tours go through some of the best picturesque points in the Dandenongs. Guests will see towering trees, hilly arches and scenic lakes during their train tour. Spotting some native wildlife is quite common.

Based on your preferences, you can get off at any of the different stations along the way. The railway line also passes through the popular Monbulk Creek Trestle Bridge, the Nobelius Packing Shed, and the site where the 1953 landslide occurred.

  • Hi
We are coming over from NZ and would like to take a ride on Puffing Billy 1st week in August 2016 but want to be sure of a fine day before we book. Is the train busy this time of the year? Is is best to catch the train to Belgrave? Thanks, Dianne

    • Hi Dianne,

It’s still winter in Melbourne which would be classified as the low season. It is a good time to come as the crowds wont be as busy as in Spring and Summer.

If you are not driving, catch the Belgrave Train from the Melbourne CBD and alight at Belgrave. There is plenty of signage to guide you to the Puffing Billy station. The trip out to Belgrave will take around 70 minutes.

      Regards
      Jess
