Hanging Rock is also known as Mount Diogenes and is a volcanic formation formed 6 million years ago and sits 718 metres above sea level. Most famous as the scene for the novel and subsequent film “Picnic at Hanging Rock”, this location has a mysterious and magical quality. Due to its exposure to the elements, the rock formations at Hanging Rock have taken on a unique shape which makes them a popular place for photography.

Located near the townships of Woodend and Mount Macedon, there is much to do and explore around Hanging Rock. Walking to the summit takes around 40 minutes with a 3.2km circuit and is considered to be a medium difficulty. There are a number of walking tracks located throughout the Hanging Rock Reserve, as well as a large dam where you can fish. A fishing licence is required.

There is a discovery centre located here as well as expansive lawns and picnic areas which are popular for families and groups to come and spend the day. There are BBQ’s located on site and portable gas BBQ’s are also permitted except for fire-ban days. There is also a cafe located on site where you can sit an enjoy snacks or a full lunch.

You are permitted to bring your dog to the Hanging Rock Reserve, but it must remain leashed at all times. Dogs are not permitted to walk up to the summit as they may disturb the local wildlife.

So make a trip over to the beautiful Hanging Rock Reserve for an amazing day out with friends and family!
