Old Treasury Building

Due to the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) throughout Australia and the resulting restrictions imposed by the Federal and State governments, Old Treasury Building has been temporarily closed until further notice. We will keep you up to date any developments and please stay safe.

Even though there are no shortage of historic buildings in Melbourne, the Old Treasury Building is truly a masterpiece. In fact, many Melbournians often regard it as one of the finest public buildings in the nation – built back in 1862.

All through the 19th century, the Old Treasury Building was the major government office in the city where many important state affairs and meetings took place.

Old Treasury Building Address, History & Map Melbourne

This iconic building was designed and built by a young architect, John James Clark. This popular establishment is considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance Revival architecture in the country. Visitors interested in touring such architectural buildings should consider a visit to the Old Treasury Building.

This gorgeous establishment has been wonderfully restored and was opened to the public back in 1994. Visitors will get a chance to tour the property and learn more about the city’s art, history and architecture.

Explore the permanent exhibitions in this century-old building; including the ‘Victorian Archival Treasures’ and the ‘Built on Gold’. Both of these exhibitions were inaugurated in 2009 as a part of the non-profit organization of the Old Treasury Museum.

Whilst touring the establishment, you will come across many facts about the gold vaults in Old Treasury Building. The building still hosts some of those original gold vaults where the nation’s gold bullion was stored during the gold rush days. The building’s ‘Built on Gold’ exhibit clearly depicts the economic downturn and improvement in Melbourne during the gold rush period.

In addition, you’ll also see a number of rare and historic artifacts and documents relevant to Victoria’s history.
