Kensington was a popular cattle sale region and was once home to some of the state’s most major abattoirs. However, they shut down over the years which paved the way for massive urban development in the area.

Walking down the streets, one of the most noticeable things is that the housing structure consists largely of terrace houses and apartments. You will see plenty of Victorian and Edwardian style houses along the major streets here and there are numerous parks and public spaces which compliment the suburb’s layout.

J.J. Holland Park is an iconic recreational centre in Kensington, thanks to its family-oriented design. With a BMX track for cycling enthusiasts, a kids playground, a public swimming pool and a community centre, it is easy to see why it attracts many visitors. There is also a public park that fronts the Maribyrnong River and offers stunning views of the surrounding area.

Kensington also has many cafes and restaurants and has a lively bar scene. You will find plenty of shops along the busy Macaulay Road where you will find bakeries, a medical centre, hairdressers, gift shops and take away food stores. You will find also a Foodworks Supermarket here.

Kensington has a reliable transport system. The suburb is serviced by two train stations: Macaulay on the Upfield line and Kensington station on the Craigieburn line. Tram services are also available on route 57, while bus routes 402 and 404 connect the rest of the suburb.
