Kensington is home to part of the scenic Moonee Ponds Creek, with visitors often coming here for a run or ride along the bike paths. This area has been going through some changes, with a number of projects that are already in progress.
Kensington was once a major spot for livestock sale and stock yards, with a number of local factories once located around the suburb. After the changes in 1984, many local stock yards and factories were closed and a number of residential communities were built.
The most popular recreational area in Kensington is J.J. Holland Park, which includes a BMX track, children’s playground, community center and a public swimming pool – located just outside the South Kensington railway station.
The public parks along the river offer excellent picnicking and bicycling facilities. Guests can enjoy taking the walking tracks, riverfront trails, and enjoy playing tennis at the nearby tennis courts.
Kensington is also home to the Women’s Peace Park. For some outdoor adventure and family time, visit Skinny Park located near Bellair Street. The park has excellent walking tracks, a playground, BBQ facilities and picnic areas.
The local arts and craft market is another attraction of the area. Locals and visitors often come here to enjoy the shopping and exploring regional artworks. Check out the designer fashion stores, quaint jewelry stores and fresh produce stalls.
