Melton

Melton is a large residential suburb located 35 kilometres north-west from the CBD. What started as a tiny town in 1974 has since experienced rapid growth due to the large areas of land that have been developed for housing estates and retail space.

It serves as the local government area for the City of Melton and has a population of approximately 130,000. The suburb of Melton has approximately 60,000 residents.

Unlike other suburbs, Melton is made up of 6 key suburban areas which are amalgamated to form the locality. They include Melton West, Melton North, Toolern Vale, Kuurjang and Brookfield. The main street in Melton is High Street which contains shopping centres including Woodgrove Shopping Centre, Coburns Central Shopping Centre as well as a Morgan’s IGA supermarket.

Arts come alive in Melton with the annual Djerriwarrh Festival held in November. During this festival, a vibrant street parade, coupled with two-day market stalls attracts hundreds of visitors from across the city.

Sports are also popular in Melton with a horse racing track known as Tabcorp Park. Here you can attend an evening of harness racing and place a bet whilst enjoying dinner. Basketball is also popular with the Melton Basketball Association been the largest club of its kind in the region.

A visit to Melton is not complete without experiencing the Melton Waves Leisure Centre. This is a great place to bring the kids as you will find 7 pools here including a 25-metre indoor heated pool, a toddler swimming pool, a warm water pool, a spa, a wave pool as well as a gym and regular fitness classes.

Melton is largely dependent on private car transport, but there is a train station served by VLine trains on the Ballarat Line. Bus routes 456, 457 and 458 also operate in town as well as connecting Melton to different suburbs in the region.
