Altona Miniature Railway Public Open Days & Train Parties, Ticket Prices

The Altona Miniature Railway was established in 1976 with the expressed objective to “build and operate a passenger-carrying miniature railway in the Western suburbs area of Melbourne.” The railway began to operate in 1985 and was opened to the public in 1986.

Perhaps it is the simplicity of good-old-fashioned fun that makes this miniature railway so popular with visitors. The miniature railway is open to the public on the third Sunday of each month from 11am – 4pm. Get in early and book a few rides and then take a break for lunch.

Bring a picnic as there are picnic tables located on site as well as a small kiosk, bathroom facilities as well as free parking. There will also be a coffee van on site on the public train days where you can get delicious coffee, cold drinks and snacks.

The Altona Miniature Railway is also available for private bookings including birthdays or other celebrations where you get sole use of the railway, unlimited rides for the duration of the party, the use of the picnic areas and tables, the use of park style double BBQ and the use of on site rubbish and recycle bins. You are also permitted to organise your own catering.

To get to Altona Miniature Railway by public transport, take a train to Newport Station, and then get on Bus 432 to Yarraville. Drop off at Bayside Secondary College from where the railway is a short distance.
