Rupertswood Mansion Sunbury, Ashes History, Weddings & High Tea

Sunbury has a rich history as it was one of the first locations settled in Victoria in 1836. The first post-office opened in 1856 and the township flourished. Rupertswood Mansion was built in 1864 by the Clarke family and this mansion still stands today as one of the most important historical icons in Sunbury.

After its completion, the mansion’s original owners sold it to a wealthy native, upon whose death the property was converted to a school. The mansion has since been renovated, and at some point operated as a hotel for grand events such as weddings and corporate parties. Today, the mansion operates as the headquarters to the private high school, Salesian College.

Rupertswood is also world famous due to hosting the first ever “Ashes” series between Australia and England. In 1882, the touring English cricket team came to Rupertswood to play a social game of cricket, winning against a local team. Lady Clarke took the bails, burnt them and presented them to the English captain as a trophy. To this day, the Ashes have become one of the most sought-after trophies in sporting history.

You can view the outside of the mansion and the grounds on weekends or after school hours and there is a lovely lake located here where you can come and feed the ducks during your visit.

As it operates as a school, Rupertswood no longer offers wedding receptions here, nor does it offer high tea.

You can get to Rupertswood Mansion via public transport, as Sunbury is well serviced with train services regularly running from the Melbourne CBD to the Sunbury station. Trips take around 45 minutes each way.
