Castlemaine

Victoria was once a famous destination for gold seekers and explorers. So during the Gold Rush period, many towns in the state were the prime gold mining towns.

The town of Castlemaine was a former gold mining town, located between the two famous towns of Bendigo and Ballarat. Although the town is no longer a famous gold mining destination, it has gained popularity as a thriving arts, cultural and agricultural spot. Gradually, the town is also gaining popularity as a day trip destination from Melbourne.

Castlemaine is a popular tourist destination for history buffs; offering magnificent historic buildings, an old market square and museums to explore. You’ll also find historic architecture, churches and hotels in this beautiful town.

Major historical attractions include a red-brick hall built in 1898, a former technical school built in 1918 and a courthouse built in 1889. The Castlemaine Market built in 1862 is now the visitor centre in town. You can stop by to find brochures, coupons and maps of the local areas.

The town is home to a monument; built in honour of the explorers who lost their lives during the gold rush (known as the Burke and Wills monument), located at the eastern end of Mostyn Street. The Castlemaine Diggings National heritage park is also a popular site, which was once the major gold mining area in the town.

The beautiful Castlemaine Botanic Gardens is also a popular attraction; featuring many varieties of native trees (including oaks and elms), open lawns, colourful garden beds and a lake.
