Coburg has a history that dates as far back as the 1830’s when the area was first surveyed and named Pentridge. Today, Coburg is home to many historic buildings, including the iconic HM Pentridge Prison, whose first prisoners arrived in 1851. Once listed as one of the state’s most secure penal facilities, the prison is today a popular residential space and tourist attraction, mainly due to the fact that it once housed some of Australia’s most dangerous criminals.

Away from the prison, Coburg is also known for its charming natural attractions. Merri Creek, for instance, is one of the most significant locations in the suburb. The creek has a trail that runs along with it, and which is popular with cyclists, runners and dog walkers. There are several picnic sites close to the creek too, all of which offer great views of the verdant surroundings and the waterway.

Enjoy shopping along Sydney Road as there are many small businesses here that sell fresh groceries and meat, household items, second-hand clothing as well as electrical stores, pharmacies dentists and doctors offices. You will find supermarkets on the corner of Sydney Road and Bell Street as well as a large carpark right near the Coburg Train station.

Coburg is also home to the Winter Nights Market which runs every Saturday night throughout June and July. Each Winter Nights Market hosts around 30 stall holders and street vendors, ticking off every foodie’s wish list.

Coburg is serviced by the Upfield train line with three main stops; Moreland and Coburg Train station within the suburb and Batman Train Station just outside the border of the suburb. There are also frequent tram services which run up Sydney Road via the 1, 8 and 19 routes.
