Burwood Melbourne Victoria, Shopping Centre & Hotel Accommodation

Burwood’s history stretches as far back as 1879 when the very first settlement was established in the area. Prior to that, the settlement was referred to as Norwood. Over the years, the area developed commercially and spread to what was then known as the Hartwell train station. At the turn of the 20th century, Burwood had a bustling local market garden. The development of the Toorak Road tramline not only opened up the suburb to the rest of Victoria, but it also accelerated residential development in the region.

Today, Burwood is a vibrant suburb whose numerous attractions and amenities make it a delightful place to be. Enjoy shopping at the main Burwood Shopping Centre which is easily accessible at the intersection of Burwood Highway and Warrigal Road. Alternatively, opt for the shopping centre at Bennettswood which is located on the corner of Station Street and the Burwood Highway.

Burwood has some great outdoor spaces including Wattle Park which is best known for its more than 12,000 wattle trees. This public park is also an ideal venue for functions and social events too. Other facilities at the park include kids playground, BBQ facilities as well as a 9-hole golf course. Gardiners Creek Reserve is also great to visit as there are cycling and walking tracks that are open to the public.

Burwood is also well known for the large Deakin University here with undergraduate and postgraduate studies in arts, business, education, information technology, law, nursing, psychology, science, and performing and creative arts.

Burwood has a reliable transport system that includes interconnected bus routes and tram route 75 that connects the suburb to the CBD. Train services are not available in the suburb, however, you will find Burwood Train Station located in the nearby suburb of Glen Iris via the Alamein train line.
