The City of Melbourne is a sprawling municipality that covers a number of Melbourne suburbs over 36 square kilometres and has a population of around 120,000 people.

The Melbourne central business district (CBD) is the heart of greater Melbourne and sits in the south of Victoria along Port Phillip Bay.

Suburbs that closely border the Melbourne CBD include Carlton, Docklands, East Melbourne, Flemington, North Melbourne, Parkville, Southbank, South Wharf, South Yarra and West Melbourne.

Further out, Melbourne suburbs can be broken down into “cities” or “shires” which include a number of suburbs and are run by local councils.

There are many attractions that can be visited in the many suburbs that surround Melbourne such as the beaches in St Kilda, the Melbourne Zoo in Parkville, the Werribee Park Zoo in Werribee and Scienceworks in Williamstown, just to name a few.

You will also find many hotel and motel providers in the suburbs of Melbourne. To travel out to these suburbs, there are Metro Train and Yarra Tram services to the surrounding suburbs and VLine Train services which travel further out to the outer suburbs.
